BREEAM is a recognised assessment methodology used to determine how sustainable and energy efficient a commercial building is across nine different sustainability measures. It is one of the world’s leading sustainability assessment methods created as a cost-effective means of bringing sustainable value to a development. As a scheme it rewards efforts to engage in sustainability from concept through to post completion and monitoring how a building is used / performs in reality. It seeks to influence thoughts, intentions, plans and designs of projects at every RIBA stage.

The scheme helps investors, developers, design and construction teams and occupiers to use natural resources more efficiently. It is an industry recognised standard against which people can feel confident in the sustainability of their asset as well as a tool against which buildings sustainability criteria can be compared.

BREEAM uses a series of assessments e.g. ecological, flood risk, travel plans and air testing, approved industry standards and proven theories and scientific research on human behaviour, building use and environmental impact to shape the assessment criteria included in its technical manuals.
